But if I were to follow in his footsteps, and get my HVAC certification, that would mean I also had the freedom to move away and find a good job.
I liked the idea of traveling more than I ever liked to actually travel. I came from a very small and isolated town, and more than anything I wanted to get out and see the world. The thing is, when I saw more of the world I didn’t like it that much more than home. It wasn’t that my hometown was terrible, I just hated the feeling like I was trapped there. My mom told me she understood that feeling, so I needed to give myself the power to move wherever I wanted. My dad was an A/C repair tech and had been all his life, but he didn’t want to move, he liked it here. Mom explained to me that as an HVAC tech he could easily move to any state in the country and find an equally good job, he just never wanted that. But if I were to follow in his footsteps, and get my HVAC certification, that would mean I also had the freedom to move away and find a good job. I started doing a lot of research after that, not about the nuts and bolts of HVAC work, but the sort of job opportunities that were available. It was those results that really motivated me to find an HVAC program to prepare for certification, because I found jobs everywhere. Literally, in every single state I checked, there were dozens of HVAC tech jobs, either for private companies or public institutions. Once I finally get my HVAC certification, the world will be my oyster!
