Do you remember your grandma’s house, or maybe your old aunt so-and-so’s house? Remember how they had those cute bean bag type cats with long, outstretched paws, sitting down at the bottom of the doorways? Sometimes, they were sitting on the window sill at the bottom of the window, as well. Well, hardly anyone has those draft busters anymore. They amy look old fashioned, and I guess they kind of are, but they really can help with the costs of running your heating and cooling system. If your heater or a/c has to constantly be worried about heating and cooling air that continues to come in through the cracks and crevices around windows and doors, that heater or a/c has to run a lot more frequently. The more often your a/c engages, the higher your utility bill goes. In fact, anything at all that you can do to help your heating and cooling system spend more down time off, the better off you will be. For example, I do not use the oven in the summer. The additional heat of the oven, added to the natural heat outside, is just too much for my poor old a/c to deal with. If I ran the oven, I swear my a/c would never shut off. So, I use the microwave. I also have blackout curtains on my windows. When I close my draperies, the sun is completely blocked out. It’s like a cave in my house – a cave with air conditioning that doesn’t have to fight the rays of the sun streaming in the windows. In the winter, I open those drapes and let the warmth of the sun help my heater.
